An original souvenir cinema brochure for Lady Caroline Lamb (1972), written and directed by Robert Bolt, produced by Fernando Ghia. An Anglo-Italian co-production released in the UK in 1972.

The cover is a full-bleed close-up profile portrait of Sarah Miles as Lady Caroline Lamb — jewelled crown, pearl drop earring, gold mesh choker, and feather-trimmed costume — set against a near-black background with the title in elegant white cursive script. One of the most striking and beautiful cover images of any British film brochure of the era.

The interior opens with a double cast page presenting six of the film’s principals in rounded portrait frames: John Mills, who received the 1971 Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Ryan’s Daughter, with a career spanning 40 years and over 80 films; Margaret Leighton, who starred on Broadway in four plays and in numerous British films including The Winslow Boy, The Constant Husband, and Zee and Co; Pamela Brown, a major stage actress of three decades with credits including Secret Ceremony and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever; Silvia Monti, Italian actress playing Miss Milbanke, the girl who tempts Lord Byron away from Caroline; Ralph Richardson, knighted in 1947, whose films include Exodus, Dr. Zhivago, Khartoum, and Battle of Britain; and Sir Laurence Olivier, made a Life Peer in 1970, who made his stage debut at the age of 15 and became the leading actor of his day, with films including Wuthering Heights, Rebecca, Henry V, Hamlet, Richard III, and Nicholas and Alexandra.

A further cast page profiles Jon Finch as William Lamb — coming directly to this role from the title role in Roman Polanski’s Macbeth and his starring role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Frenzy; Richard Chamberlain as Lord Byron — who became an international star through the TV series Dr. Kildare and is noted in the brochure as having been the first American actor to play Hamlet on an English stage since John Barrymore in 1928, having also appeared as Tchaikovsky in The Music Lovers; and Sarah Miles as Lady Caroline Lamb — trained at RADA, with major credits including The Servant, Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Up, Passage of Love, and Ryan’s Daughter, the latter written by her husband Robert Bolt, who wrote and directed this film and whose stage work she also appeared in, including Vivat! Vivat! Regina!.

The brochure includes a full-page colour oval portrait of Sarah Miles as Caroline — white Regency dress, auburn curls, direct gaze — with the film title in matching white cursive script. A magnificent centrepiece image and one of the finest interior spreads in any British film programme of the period.

A film written by Robert Bolt, with Sarah Miles in the title role, and a supporting cast of Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, John Mills, Richard Chamberlain, and Margaret Leighton — this is an exceptional piece of early 1970s British cinema history. Sarah Miles and her husband Robert Bolt were two of the most celebrated names in British film at the time, and this brochure is a highly collectable document of the production.
