The Great Waltz (1972) Original Cinema Brochure – Horst Buchholz, Rossano Brazzi, Mary Costa, Johann Strauss
An original souvenir cinema brochure for The Great Waltz (1972), directed and produced by Andrew L. Stone, screenplay by Andrew L. Stone. An MGM musical telling the story of Johann Strauss Jr. — the Waltz King of Vienna — filmed entirely on location. Music of Johann Strauss Jr., Johann Strauss Sr., and Jacques Offenbach; lyrics and musical adaptations by Robert Craig Wright and George Forrest; Musical Director Roland Shaw; narration sung by Kenneth McKellar; choir: The Mike Sammes Singers.
The cover features a magnificent illustrated artwork composition: a grand Viennese ballroom scene contained within a pearl-bordered circular vignette, dominated by a sweeping crystal chandelier and dozens of waltzing couples in full evening dress, with an alpine village and mountains visible above. In the foreground Johann Strauss Jr. in tailcoat holds his violin and is about to kiss his leading lady. The title The Great Waltz appears in bold red cursive lettering at lower left. An exceptionally attractive piece of 1970s film graphic design.
The interior cast pages profile three of the supporting principals: Rossano Brazzi as Baron Monte Tedesco — a truly international film favourite whose many films include South Pacific, The Adventures, Summertime, Three Coins in the Fountain, East of Java, and Krakatoa, East of Java; Yvonne Mitchell as Anna Strauss — British actress and playwright, winner of the Television National Award for The Divided Heart and the Berlin Festival Award for Woman in a Dressing Gown, with further credits including Wuthering Heights, The Barnacle Bill, and extended West End stage work; Nigel Patrick as Johann Strauss Sr. — actor-director whose films include The Sea Shall Not Have Them, League of Gentlemen, The Informers, and The Executioner, which he also directed.
A profile of producer-director Andrew L. Stone notes that he wears the triple crown of producer, director, and writer, pioneered the use of actual locations for film-making, and began his career with musicals including The Great Victor Herbert, Stormy Weather, The Bachelor’s Daughter, before moving to acclaimed thrillers including The Steel Trap, The Password is Courage, and The Secret of My Success. The Great Waltz was his most recent film at time of publication and the first major musical made entirely on location.
A spectacular double-page spread of full colour production photography shows the grand ballroom waltz sequence — a blur of blue and white gowns, couples spinning beneath glittering chandeliers in a recreation of imperial Vienna. Additional stills show Johann playing violin from atop a horse-drawn carriage through the streets of Vienna, and conducting his orchestra. A full story synopsis and complete cast and production credits complete the brochure, including the note that the original soundtrack is available on MGM Records MGM 2315130. The brochure was designed by Al Rockall and printed and published by Sackville Sheets, 8 Welbeck Way, London W1.
